Meet Our Pastor Rev. Dr. Jim Bowden

James (Jim) Bradley Bowden was born in Denver, Colorado. He has lived in Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas. He received his B.A. in Theatre Arts in 1983 from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. After doing extended graduate work in theatre at the University of Oklahoma, he went to Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University where he earned his Master of Divinity degree in 1990 and Doctor of Ministry degree in 1996. In 1990, he was awarded the Paul W. Quillian award in Homiletics for best written sermon by a senior student. His Doctor of Ministry Project focused on the use of narrative in long-range planning for congregations.

 

Dr. Bowden has traveled extensively, serving twice as delegate to the World Methodist Council (Brighton, England 2001); (Seoul, South Korea, 2006). He has also led groups to places of biblical interest in Israel, the United Kingdom, Africa, and Western Europe.

 

Dr. Bowden is committed to excellence in education. For several years, he has taught “The Rise of Methodism” for the Perkins School of Theology Course of Study Program.

 

He is also committed to health care, serving on the Board of Trustees at Methodist Central Hospital in Dallas from 1995-1999 and the Golden Cross Board from 1995-2002. Currently, he serves on the Advisory Board of Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

 

Dr. Bowden served as the Chaplain for the Oak Cliff LIONS Club from 1995-1999 and President of the Duncanville Rotary Club from 2009-2010.

 

One of his deepest passions is serving as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)—a Guardian Ad Litem for children who are neglected and/or abused.

 

Prior to coming to First UMC, Duncanville, Dr. Bowden served the following churches: Greenland Hiills UMC (Dallas); First UMC, Lancaster; Munger Place UMC (Dallas); First UMC, Boyd; Kessler Park UMC (Dallas); University UMC (Wichita Falls);and Waples Memorial UMC in Denison, Texas.

 

He met Martha Smith at the University of Oklahoma in 1983. They married on Feburary 2nd, 1985 at McFarlin UMC in Norman, Oklahoma. They have two children (Jordan, 19; and Jackson, 15).

 

Martha Bowden

 

 

Martha was born to Frank and Doris Smith and raised in El Reno, Oklahoma. Her late mother was a music teacher and local church choir director.

 

She earned her B.A. in Letters at Oklahoma University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. During her time at OU, she was a Rhodes Scholar Candidate. In 1988 she earned her Master of Theological Studies at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. Her emphases of study were Old Testament, Hebrew, and Greek. She holds membership in two honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Theta Kappa.

 

Martha is in her 10th year of service at the Episcopal School of Dallas teaching computer technology and also serving as Coordinator of Diversity.

Jordan Micah Bowden (19) graduated from Duncanville High School in 2011. Currently, he is a freshman at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas, majoring in Exercise Science.

Jackson Chase Bowden (15) Jackson is a freshman at Duncanville High School and works at Hot Topic at the Parks Mall in Arlington, Texas.
